Ambler Farm: A Local's Guide to Wilton's Historic Town Farm

Wilton's Farm, Open to Everyone

On Hurlbutt Street, just outside Wilton Center, Ambler Farm keeps more than 200 years of local farming history alive. The 22-acre town-owned farm is open to the public every day, free of charge.

Families come to see the goats and sheep, shop the Saturday farm stand and join seasonal traditions like maple sugaring and Ambler Farm Day. More than 25,000 people visit each year.

Here's what to know before you go.

Two Centuries of Farming in Wilton

The farm's story starts in 1794, when Josiah Raymond began buying land here. He built the large white Raymond-Ambler House in 1799, and under later generations the farm grew to nearly 300 acres.

Through marriage, the property passed to the Ambler family, who farmed it for generations. Betty Ambler, the last of the family to live on the farm, died in 1998.

In 1999, Wilton voters backed the town's purchase of 22 acres as protected open space. A nonprofit, Friends of Ambler Farm, grew out of that effort and now runs the farm's programs.

Several historic buildings still stand, including a yellow farmhouse from around 1800, an 1880 horse barn, the red hay barn from 1899 and a 1900 ice house.

What to See and Do

Ambler Farm is a working farm, so there's always something growing, hatching or happening.

  • The animals. Meet the goats, sheep and rabbits, plus chickens, ducks and geese in summer. Look, but don't feed or pet them.

  • The farm stand. Fresh produce on Saturdays from 9 am to 1 pm through October. The farm also sells at the Wilton Farmers' Market on the Town Green on Wednesdays.

  • Gardens and fields. Wander the grounds, bring a picnic and take in the historic barns.

  • Maple sugaring. From February to mid-March, the farm taps trees and boils sap in its sugar shack.

  • Seasonal events. Sheep shearing in April, summer concerts in the Red Barn, Ambler Farm Day in the fall and a holiday greens sale in December.

  • Programs for kids. Summer camp, after-school programs and a youth apprentice program for older students.

Check amblerfarm.org for event dates and registration.
