Harbor Point sits in Stamford's South End, where the city meets Long Island Sound. In less than two decades it has gone from empty industrial land to one of the busiest neighborhoods in Fairfield County.
Today it's a mix of apartments, offices, restaurants, marinas and waterfront parks. People come for dinner by the water, weekend walks along the harbor and summer festivals on the boardwalk.
If you're heading to Harbor Point for the first time, here's what to know.
For much of the 20th century, Stamford's South End waterfront was industrial. Manufacturers like Yale & Towne and Pitney Bowes operated here, along with a power plant that later closed.
By the 2000s, much of the land sat contaminated and unused. Stamford-based developer Building and Land Technology (BLT) took over the project in 2008 and started with streets, sewers and sidewalks before a single apartment went up.
The cleanup turned into one of Connecticut's best-known brownfield redevelopment stories. Harbor Point earned LEED-ND Gold certification for neighborhood design, and today it covers more than 100 acres of homes, offices, parks and public waterfront.
Harbor Point is built for walking. Most visitors park once and spend a few hours exploring.
The waterfront and boardwalk. Public walkways run along the harbor, with views of the boats and the Sound. The boardwalk also hosts waterfront festivals in warmer months.
Parks and open space. The neighborhood includes more than 20 acres of parkland, with lawns and green space where people picnic, walk dogs and catch summer events.
Restaurants and bars. The South End has dozens of restaurants, from casual spots to waterfront dining. It's one of Stamford's go-to areas for a night out.
Marinas. Several marinas line the shoreline, and watching the boats come and go is part of the appeal.
Coworking and cafes. Plenty of spots to grab a coffee or set up a laptop for a few hours.
Restaurants open and close often, so check current listings before you plan a dinner around a specific spot.
Harbor Point is in Stamford's South End, just south of the Stamford train station and close to I-95. Washington Boulevard and Atlantic Street both lead you there from downtown.
If you're coming by train, the Stamford Transportation Center is a short trip away. The neighborhood has offered free shuttles and trolleys between the train station, downtown and the waterfront, so check current routes before you go.
If you drive, plan to use a garage or street parking nearby. Read the posted signs, since rules vary by block.
Tips Before You Go
Summer weekends and festival days get busy, so arrive early if you want a waterfront table.
Wear comfortable shoes. The best way to see Harbor Point is on foot along the water.
Evenings are a great time to visit, when the waterfront restaurants fill up and the walkways light up.
Harbor Point is close to the rest of Stamford's favorite spots, so it's easy to pair the waterfront with a stop downtown.
Downtown Stamford. A short ride north, with shops, theaters and restaurants around Bedford Street and Atlantic Street.
Mill River Park. A downtown park along the river with walking paths, a playground and seasonal events.
Cove Island Park. A larger waterfront park on Stamford's east side, with beaches and walking trails.
Stamford Museum & Nature Center. A family favorite in North Stamford with a farm, trails and exhibits.
Harbor Point isn't just a place to eat and walk. It's also home to offices, coworking spaces and companies of every size, from startups to major headquarters. Every one of them depends on reliable, secure technology.
