Mill River Park: A Local's Guide to Downtown Stamford's Green Space

Downtown Stamford's Backyard

Right in the middle of downtown Stamford, between the office towers and the West Side, the Mill River winds through one of the city's favorite parks. Mill River Park is where office workers take their lunch, families spend Saturday mornings and the whole city turns out for cherry blossom season.

There's something going on in every season. Spring brings the blossoms, summer brings free concerts and fitness classes, and winter means ice skating under the lights.

Here's what to know before your visit.

How a River Came Back to Life

For centuries, a dam held back the Mill River in downtown Stamford. In 2000, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers backed removing it, which let the river flow freely for the first time in nearly 400 years.

The city then set out to turn the riverbanks into a true downtown park. The nonprofit Mill River Park Collaborative, founded in 2003, took the lead. Landscape firm Olin designed the park, and restoration of the river started in 2009.

The first section opened in May 2013. Since then the park has kept growing, adding a carousel in 2017, an ice rink and fountain in 2018 and the Whittingham Discovery Center in 2022.

The park's famous cherry trees have their own story. In 1957, Stamford resident Junzo Nojima gave the city 120 Japanese cherry trees. The originals were removed in 2009, seeds from a few of them were planted in 2012, and a new cherry grove now lines the riverwalk.

What to See and Do

Mill River Park packs a lot into a compact downtown space, and most programs are free.

  • Cherry blossoms. Each spring, the cherry trees along the riverwalk bloom and draw crowds from across Fairfield County. When the park opened in 2013, its grove was described as the largest in New England.

  • The carousel. An indoor carousel that's a favorite for young kids and birthday parties.

  • Ice skating. In winter, the Cohen Ice Skating Center offers about 9,000 square feet of ice for public skating.

  • Whittingham Discovery Center. Part museum, part classroom, with hands-on nature exhibits, field trips and camps.

  • The riverwalk and trails. Paths follow the restored Mill River, a peaceful break from the downtown streets around it.

  • Free events. Summer concerts, movie nights and fitness classes, plus weekend programs for families.
